POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 10) – The NHRA season-opening CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway marked Brandon Bernstein’s 100th career event driving the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster.
After qualifying ninth with a 4.533-second elapsed time at 325.85 miles per hour, Bernstein was slated to face off against No. 8 qualifier Cory McClenathan in the first round of eliminations. In 19 previous match ups between the two friends, Bernstein had won 17. This time, however, the tide turned.
Though the Bud/Lucas Oil dragster made a quick, straight run down the quarter-mile (4.576/322.81), it wasn’t quick enough to defeat McClenathans 4.518/329.34 effort.
“Cory’s a tough customer and he’s got an especially good team this season,” said Bernstein. “Looks like it’s going to be another year of very tight competition despite some of the rule changes.”
Brandon is tied in 11th place in NHRA Top Fuel standings.
The NHRA circuit makes its next stop in Phoenix Feb. 22-24, where both Bernsteins, Brandon and his father Kenny, each scored their first career Top Fuel victories.
