CHANDLER, Ariz. (Jan. 25, 2008) – Antron Brown, driver of the David Powers-owned Matco Tools dragster, impressed the onlookers during the opening day of testing at the National Time Trials near Phoenix. The 16-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle winner raced his Lee Beard-tuned Matco-backed rail to the quickest 60-foot elapsed time of the day Friday at Firebird International Raceway.
“It was a good day,” Brown said. “We got all the bugs worked out and hit the track twice. We shook on the opening run, but the second run was a thing of beauty. The (incremental) numbers were great and we’re right on track. Lee (Beard) and the guys did a great job on Friday.”
Brown and the Matco Tools car suffered severe tire-shake on its opening run of the six-day test in the Valley of the Sun as the rookie Top Fuel racer posted a solid .076 of-a-second reaction time. On Friday’s second attempt, the veteran NHRA racer used a reaction time of .066 and clocked the quickest 60-foot elapsed time of the day, .839 seconds. The Matco dragster posted a half-track time of 3.07 seconds on a planned shut off run.
“Antron (Brown) continues to do a great job,” Beard said. “He listens and just soaks up all the information that we continue to throw his way. He’s a pleasure to have on our race team. The plan is to go out and make three or four runs on Saturday and try to earn Antron’s crossover Top Fuel license.”
Preseason testing will continue on Saturday at F.I.R. The 2008 NHRA season begins at Pomona, Calif., Feb. 7-10, with the 48th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals.
