BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 18) -- Intermittent rain played havoc with the running of the O’Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals, but through the delays caused by rain and time spent drying the race surface, the Kenny Bernstein-owned Budweiser/Lucas Oil team made a solid final four showing.
Driver Brandon Bernstein qualified sixth in the Top Fuel field at Bristol Dragway with a 4.571/320.86.
Bernstein won the opening round of eliminations, defeating Bob Vandergriff, Jr. with a 4.586/324.44 vs. Vandergriff ' s 4.740/330.23.
"We are focused this weekend,” said Bernstein. “We need some round wins. The team is doing a great job and I need to be on my game."
Bernstein scored a big win over Doug Kalitta in the second round. The two drivers were fairly even in career matches against each other, but Bernstein was able to gain one more notch in his win column. The Budweiser/Lucas Oil car darted around on the top end of the race track, but crossed the finish line first with a 4.545/326.71 to Kalitta’s 4.810/280.19.
"The car was a handful that time, “said Bernstein. “It was all over the track. But this is great win for our team. We ' re going rounds. We had to do it."
Bernstein transferred to the semifinals to face Larry Dixon. Dixon had the performance advantage and took the round win with a 4.555/317.05 to Bernstein’s 4.600/322.88.
“All in all it was a good weekend,” said Bernstein. “We got some round wins. Tim (Richards, crew chief) was trying some new tune-up combinations and they look like they have potential.”
Bernstein maintains seventh position in NHRA Top Fuel point standings.
