[coverattach=1]CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 22) – Brandon Bernstein and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team made their first final round appearance of the season at the Lucas Slick Mist Nationals at Firebird International Raceway. Their runner-up finish was a strong statement for the new tuning duo of crew chief Rob Flynn and assistant crew chief Mike Guger.

“We had three good consistent runs getting to the final,” said Bernstein, “and then the car surprised us by losing traction in the money round.

“We’re hungry for a win, but we’ve proven in just two outings this year, scoring a semifinal appearance and a runner-up finish, that we’re contenders.”

In qualifying, Bernstein drove to the No. 5 position with a 3.875-second elapsed time at 316.38 mph.

In the opening round of eliminations against Joe Hartley, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team took the round win with a 3.890/306.33 while Hartley lost traction at the hit of the throttle, coasting across the finish line with a 9.214/82.49.

In the second round, the Bernstein family had an opportunity to celebrate the round win as Spencer Massey was up in smoke and the Budweiser/Lucas Oil team clocked another good consistent run, 3.844/310.05, to transfer to the semifinals.

“We’re just concentrating on winning one round at a time,” said Bernstein. “So far, so good.”

In the semifinals, Bernstein squared off against Larry Dixon. Bernstein crossed the finish line first with a strong 3.847/306.33 vs. Dixon 's 8.900/76.26.

“That was a huge round win for us,” said Bernstein. “Rob, Mike, and the team did a great job. We’re just happy to be going to the final round. We’re focused and ready to go.”

In the finals against Antron Brown, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster lost traction and began to spin the tires. Bernstein was off and on the throttle trying to get power to the ground, but Brown took the win light with a 3.846/310.63.

Bernstein is second in NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel standings, 42 points out of the lead.

Budweiser Lager Lesson: Budweiser is one of the most difficult beers to brew because it is fermented at cooler temperatures, thus taking more time to brew, yet resulting in a clean, crisp taste that you don’t get from other beers.
