BIG CROWDS AND BIG BURNOUTS AT FUNNY CAR SPECTACULAR

Palmyra Dragway in Mackay hosted one of North Queensland ’s most successful Drag Racing events ever on Saturday night (28th October) with big crowds witnessing even bigger burnouts by some of the countries leading Top Alcohol Funny Car teams at the Pedders Funny Car Spectacular.

Steven Reed of Bunya, piloting the Nulon Engine Oils Funny Car, was one of the stars of the show keeping the crowds entertained with his long smoky burnouts and low 6-second passes all night long in his 3500 horsepower machine.

Looking strong throughout the event, he comfortably took wins against fellow Funny Car racers Dean McClennan and Chris Hollingsworth in the first two rounds of competition, which set up a showdown against Ben Bray.

With the Nulon car performing well, Reed put a bit more into it for the final but was unable to overcome Bray after throwing the supercharger belt off at the 1000 foot mark, meaning he had to settle for the runner up position.

“The massive crowd up here was amazing, they were on their feet all night long cheering every pass by Funny Cars. I am pretty sure everyone left with a smile on their face,” Reed said.

“The guys at Palmyra Dragway put in a lot of effort to make the Funny Car Spectacular happen and it showed in the success of the event. Drag Racing is definitely alive and strong in North Queensland .”

“The weather conditions were also great for racing and the track staff did a fantastic job at preparing the surface for our high powered cars.”

“The Nulon Funny Car was strong all night and I am really happy with how it has come through the event.”

“Unfortunately I wasn’t able to take the win in the Final but it was a great preparation for our assault on the Australian Championship and hopefully we will be able to get one back on Ben (Bray) next time we meet.”

The team will now be returning to their Brisbane base to prepare for the next round of the Australian Top Alcohol Championship in Perth , WA on November 18.

Joining Steven Reed and his Funny Car in Perth for Reed Racing will be wife Debbie and her Nulon Dragster, who is eager to get back to taking up to the guys after her record setting win at the season opener in Sydney in September.
