Bertsch reaches semifinals in Grand Bend

GRAND BEND, Ont. - IHRA Torco's CompetitionPlus.com Pro Stock driver Bob Bertsch wheeled his Rislone Engine Treatment sponsored '07 Ford Mustang to a semifinal finish during this past weekend's Mopar Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol at the Grand Bend Motorplex in Grand Bend, Ont. Bertsch upset defending World Champion Pete Berner while running career-best numbers during eliminations.

Bertsch, from Willis, Mich., qualified his Jon Kaase powered Ford Mustang 13th in the field with a then career best 6.409 second elapsed time at 218.48 mph. In his first round battle with Berner, a rematch from two weeks prior, Berner had troubles off the line, while Bertsch had no such problems and rocketed to another career-best, a 6.388 at 217.35 mph. In round two, Bertsch took out another former World Champ, Brian Gahm, who fouled his chances away, giving Bertsch the easy win with a 6.461 at 215.17 mph. In the semifinals, Bertsch had problems off the line of his own, spinning the tires hard and giving his opponent Steve Spiess the win, who went on to run a 6.373 at 220.08 mph.

"It was a good weekend for us," said Bertsch. "There were several career bests for us. The track was real tricky all weekend, especially on Sunday. We shook the tires pretty hard on the first qualifier Friday, which kind of makes going into Saturday scary because you have no data. We bounced back and ran a career best to qualify for the show."

"On Sunday, it pretty much was a one-lane show," Bertsch continued. "We all had the same conditions to run in, but you didn't see anyone with lane choice taking the left lane. Almost all the wins came out of the right lane. But, you have to play the cards your dealt, and we still had a good showing for Rislone this past weekend. The car is really coming around and reacting the way we want it to. We're still a relatively young group in this Pro Stock game, and we're working real hard to get to the top."

The Rislone Pro Stock team will have a week off before heading to Martin, Mich., for the Torco Race Fuels Northern Nationals.
