EPPING, NH – There are a few times that a IHRA Torco’s CompetitionPlus Pro Stock driver can lick his chops headed into a race on the 11-race IHRA Knoll Gas Nitro Jam tour. This weekend’s IHRA Amalie Oil North American Nationals in Epping, NH., provides that opportunity.
Defending world champion Pete Berner knows that very well with the atmospheric conditions expected for New England Dragway.
"It's going to be fast and you'll see a lot of runs over 220 mph," Berner said. "Watch the night session. It's sea level and if the weather forecast of low 80s and low humidity the barometer will be decent. You had better bring a low 6.30 if you want to run at the top."
Berner intends to do just that. Just 63-points out of first place, Berner said he intends to make up as much of the deficit as he can over the course of the weekend. The only problem with that plan is what Mother Nature might have in the works.
Traditionally this event is run the second weekend of September where cooler temperatures and optimal conditions are always the norm. The event was rescheduled in the middle of the August where the atmosphere isn’t as predictable.
“When you have a situation where the weather can be unpredictable, you have to make every early run count,” Berner said. “Every run is important, but in an instance where you can have some less than ideal weather coming in, you make sure you’re solid in the show first and work from there.”
Berner has winning on his mind after a .007 foul ended his chances in the first round last weekend in Martin, Michigan.
“That one hurt, but what can you do.” Berner said. “We are ready to do well this weekend.”
