funny,,,,, when Whit was replaced by Beckman everyone said it's business.... how's this different... I'm no beckman fan , but explain to me the difference

The difference is that Jack was hired as Whit's replacement AFTER Don let Whit go vs Jack's crew being taken and reassigned to another DSR team that was struggling, only to be left with the crew/equipment that was struggling to begin with...MANY TIMES!!!
Whit's situation was his own doing (and I'm a Whit fan also) to be shown the door. Jack, on the other hand has been doing the best with what he's been given and Don keeps taking from Jack to give to Hagan and Capps.
See the difference?

I think Jack is an employee of Schumacher. So It is Don's crew.
He can do whatever he wants Jack is along for the ride. When Jack
pays the bills and hires the crew then it can be called Jack's crew.

I too feel bad for Jack. All I can do however, is continue to pledge my support to him and my support (read consumer dollars) to Valvoline.

Please do Don! And thanks for checking in.
Another difference was that Whits contract was
up, and Roger and Karen Comstock came to DSR
with money from their MTS company and a deal was
struck to bring Jack in. At the same time Whit and Beard
went to David Powers Motorsports to drive a Top Fuel car.
In that deal, I was dissapointed to see Whit leave a FC
because he sure made the class exciting and he felt free
to express any opinion he had, which was very refreshing.
Beat the **** outta hearing John rattle off 8 sponsors every
time he was interviewed...
I think the sport lost a good bit of Spark when Whit stopped
driving. I know he had and still has, some GREAT IDEAS re.
safety...

Its "BUISNESS" get over it

EXACTLY. I do not feel sorry for Fast Jack one bit. He still has a ride with one of the best teams in drag racing. He still has sponsors. He has the full support of his owner pledging to get it fixed for him. My money says he will still make the Countdown. He will be fine ...

It's both Bill. Is football a sport? Yup, but at the NFL level, it's a huge business. Drag Racing is of course still a sport, but, at the pro level, particularly if sponsors are involved, it's also a business.

When did it stop being a sport and start being a business?

Either you live under a rock or you are stuck in the 1960's. The sport has been a business for the top professional teams for years. When it doesn't make business sense for them to be out there you see them pack up and leave.

I wish I could screwed like Jack is being screwed. I would shut my mouth, kiss Don's rear and love every minute of it.

:D

After all, Jack does get to drive a fuel funny car for a living....

Because it is a business, producing for the sponsors outweighs most everything else. If you sell widgets and customer A buys 1000 widgets a year and customer B buys 50 widgets a year, guess who gets all the widgets when they are in short supply? Is customer B getting screwed? Maybe. But you have to make good business decisions and not emotional decisions in order to survive.

Like Chris said, they'll get it figured out.

Exactly

When did it stop being a sport and start being a business?

How long have you been a fan of the sport? The sport is what you see on the track. Everything in the pits is owned (cars, drivers, crews) by an employer. People like Don do what's best for the business. Not saying I know this, but it's kinda obvious the NAPA contract has alot riding on it and it's best for the business to give a team that's rapidly disorganized after a DNQ and a departure the best of everything. Jack I do not know the deal on exactly when Aarons or Valvoline sponsors the car primarly, but Ron has the A + contract right now and NAPA is gonna want A + results for all the money that they spent.

This sport is 100% a business, without the business there would be nothing to watch. Drivers, Crew Chiefs, Dives (another issue for another thread; whether they are done or not) I may not like watching or hearing of any of it, but I always respect that the one pulling the strings is doing what's best for tomorrow and not just today.

When did it stop being a sport and start being a business?

About age 14-15. After that it's all business. Baseball? A business all the way down to the A teams in the minors, and arguably college. Football - at least at the college level, and in the South at the high school level. Hockey at the juniors. Basketball - college, and many high schools. And so on. In drag racing, it's a business way down, certainly in alcohol, probably in Comp, and even down into the Supers for many people.

In short, like most things: follow the money. As soon as it stops being hobby-scale money, it becomes a business. Get over it.

Something to think about.

A funny car is running consistent and fast. A new car built to the exact same specs and is put together by the same team. The crew chief puts his tune-up in both cars. The original car goes down the track every time and the new car fails to go down the track at all.

Kinda makes you go hhmmmm.........:)
