Beckman Collects His First Funny Car Round Win in Richmond

DINWIDDIE, Va. (Oct. 15, 2006) - Jack Beckman collected his first NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car round win today in three events at the Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals when he defeated Del Worsham in the opening stanza of eliminations at Virginia Motorsports Park.

Without lane choice and relegated to the less-favorable right lane, Beckman pulled out a clean run down the quarter-mile, posting a 4.876-second pass at 289.26 mph, while Worsham lost traction and slowed to a 6.204/200.59. Margin of victory: 1.2676 of a second.

Unfortunately, the second round did not see a repeat as Beckman smoked the tires on the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Charger R/T in that right lane and coasted to the finish stripe in 15.276 seconds at 63.52 mph, while Eric Medlen cruised to a 4.795/301.13 mph victory.

"This is a greedy sport," said Beckman. "It's not like when you're driving to the race you're thinking, If we could make it to the final round it would be great. But, I can't imagine anyone winning the semis and going, Well, let's just load up and go home, we've made our goal.

"The reality is, even though we have a car and team that should be able to win any race, you have to walk before you run, and we made a really solid run. The Matco Tools Dodge actually ran great every qualifying run. We were having a tough time with the race track. In the third session, we actually had one of the fastest runs going, but the asphalt wouldn't hold it.

"Fortunately, in the first round, even without lane choice, the Matco Tools guys made such a good tune-up call we were one of the quicker cars. And in the second run I'm not sure if we had a malfunction or if the race track just didn't come to us. It didn't move a car length before it went up in smoke.

"The cool thing now is I've tasted a little bit of blood, so now in Vegas I want everything."

Next up is ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Oct. 27-29.
