I've seen that happen a couple times. Once, my dad was driving our dragster and was backing up from a burnout. I was watching the car (from by the wall) just making sure everything looked good. I happened to look to my left just in time to see one of the starting line crew sweeping the track with his back to the dragster, but not early enough to get his attention or pull him out of the way. Fortunately, he wasn't hit square and mostly fell over the top of the tire, but I think he might have gotten a couple mild burns from landing on the header. Lesson learned the hard way.

You'd think that Roy Hill would know better than to turn his back on a race car on the starting line.

Yeah. My son told me about this incident. I didn't know it was a driving school instructor that wasn't paying attention!
Let's not forget that former Don Garlits crew chief Herb Parks was run over by his new driver several years ago. Sadly, he didn't survive.
I always try to pay attention when I'm on the starting line when my son's dragster is running.
This is a good reminder for all of us.

I remember when one of Kenny Bernstein's funny car crew was run over, I believe from the car lurching forward. For the rest of the event the crew wore shirts with tire tracks on it so they would be recognized as Bernstein's crew.

Thanks to Phil Burgess's recent article in National Dragster, I saw this photo verifying my post about Bernstein hitting a crew member.

The starting line is VERY dangerous, I am living proof to that. I can't count the broken bones I have had from being run over or being blown up. I have many steel parts in my body to prove it. "always stay alert."

PS; Get well Roy

at the old San Antonio Drag Raceway I saw a FC throttle stuck while backing up. He plowed into the ambulance parked under the tower. If he would have kept going straight no telling who he would have run over behind the burn out pit.

There was a T/F driver named Jim Plummer (sp?) who was killed at OCIR. I heard the throttle stuck as the car was being pushed down the fire up road & he went into the wooden fence behind the starting line. This would have been maybe 1973, cuz it was back motor car.

The most unfortunate was the very sad day with my dear friend-Shelly Howard

it is a shame how stories of sad issues that happened at the races get told wrong, including this one about Jim Plummer. one told was close the other is total BS. If you were not there like I was do not try to give your opinion with out knowing the truth PLEASE. I know the truth but it is not something that is needed to be in print or read. Just my opinion.

Larry, was the Jim Plummer story false? I was not there but read about it in Drag papers.
Cliff
I have never before had a issue with any of your post, including the ones about me but the one you posted was absolutely false and comments like that should not be posted even if they are true, all they do is bring back bad memories for the family members and all that were involved with the issue. this is the Last comment I will make on this period.
