Bazemore Eighth With Two Qualifying Sessions Remaining

Pomona - Whit Bazemore continues to learn what it’s like driving the fastest accelerating vehicle on the planet. Not that a nitromethane-powered Funny Car is a slug, but it’s not the rocket ship of a 300-inch Top Fueler. With nearly two decades of Funny Car experience under his belt, Bazemore has quickly adapted to piloting his Matco Tools Iron Eagle dragster, and gets better with each lap.

With two qualifying sessions completed, Bazemore and his Lee Beard-led race team are positioned eighth in the 16-car Top Fuel order after Baze blasted to an opening run of 4.533 seconds at 324.28 mph. The 20-time NHRA winner shut off early on Friday’s only qualifying pass after this Matco-backed rail dropped a cylinder.

“We had a problem today, the car dropped a cylinder early,” Bazemore said. “I’m still learning this Top Fuel car. I need to continue to make laps and gain experience and learn. I shut off early on that run. It’s not going to be perfect all the time. We’ll be ready for Saturday and hopefully move up in the field. I’m getting more comfortable. It’s all good.”
