<P> (9/20/08)ENNIS, Texas – Joe Baker may be racing in the Jegs Pro Modified Challenge this weekend but based on first day qualifying performances at the NHRA Fallnationals, he could compete as a competitive bracket racer.
Baker, from Milton, Fla., drove the Roger Burgess R2B2 Motors Corvette to the second quickest qualifying elapsed time at the Texas Motorplex with a 6.004 elapsed time at 240.81 miles per hour. This run came after recording a 6.010-second, 239.82 mph pass in vastly different racing conditions.
“She looks good,” Baker said, in reference to the car he’s driving this weekend, the same one he won Houston with in March. “We lost a little bit on the starting line tonight but our chances look really good to run quick on Saturday.”
Baker believes a five-second run is possible on Saturday although it’s unlikely to come in the first session.
“I think a five will come around later, but it is definitely within our grasp,” Baker added. “We lost most of our potential in the first sixty-foot tonight but we know where to adjust for Saturday.
“This car has a 5.90-something in it. I feel strongly about that.”
0A Baker has one more opportunity to improve on his No. 2 qualifying position tomorrow before the first round of eliminations later on in the afternoon.
