BACA RACES MATCO TOOLS RAIL TO NO. 5 SPOT AT LAS VEGAS

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 27, 2007) – Like riding a bicycle, veteran Top Fuel racer David Baca clocked four consistent 4.5-second passes to qualify his David Powers-owned Matco Tools dragster fifth at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. His quickest lap stopped the timers in 4.532 seconds.

A day after making his first two Top Fuel runs of the season, the veteran nitro racer posted a consistent lap on Saturday’s first qualifying session. Baca used a Lee Beard tune-up to clock a pass of 4.566 seconds at 326.48 mph to claim the No. 3 qualifying position in the Matco Tools rail. Baca capped off qualifying with a consistent lap of 4.557 at 326.16 to place the Matco dragster fifth in the Top Fuel field. On Friday afternoon, Baca carded laps of 4.532 and 4.547 seconds to earn the provisional No. 2 qualifying position. Baca, a two-time NHRA pole winner, last qualified fifth at the Dallas event last September.

“What a day at the Vegas strip,” Baca said. “To have my teammate win the (Technicoat) Shootout and for me to be in the show with four consistent runs is awesome. All I can say is that we go a round or two or maybe all the way to the finals and win this thing for Matco (Tools).”

In his first event this season, Baca will face off against No. 12 qualifier Cory McClenathan in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (PT) at The Strip at LVMS. ESPN2 will televise three hours of final eliminations coverage from the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at 7 p.m. (ET) on Oct. 28.
