POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2007) – David Baca made his sixth consecutive mid-4.5 second qualifying lap in the Matco Tools dragster Friday afternoon at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. The veteran nitro racer clocked a pass of 4.568 seconds at 329.50 mph Friday afternoon in the Matco Tools rail.
Entering the second day of qualifying for the 2007 NHRA season-finale, Baca used a tune-up from champion crew chief Lee Beard to blister the Auto Club Raceway quarter mile in 4.568 seconds at 329.50 mph to remain second in the 16-car order. Baca posted the fastest speed of Friday’s qualifying session in the Matco car. Since returning to the driver’s seat last weekend in Las Vegas , Baca has not made a qualifying run slower than 4.568 seconds. His elapsed time was the third quickest on Friday.
“This Matco (Tools)/David Powers team is just awesome,” Baca said. “It’s just really good to get in the car and go down the track. To have a top-notch car like this one is a dream come true. I’m just thankful for the opportunity. It’s a fantasy weekend for me. I don’t know if this is the last hurrah or the chance for a new beginning, but I’m just going to enjoy the moment.”
Professional nitro qualifying continues on Saturday with sessions scheduled for Noon and 3:30 p.m. (PT). ESPN2 will televise one hour of qualifying highlights at 7 p.m. (ET) and 11 p.m. (ET).
