Ashley Force advanced to the final round of the Lucas Sportsman Series race at Infineon Raceway before losing to NHRA POWERade Top Fuel driver Morgan Lucas, the former driver of her Castrol dragster.
Ms. Force, 23-year-old daughter of 13-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force, beat two-time Mac Tools U.S. Nationals champion Darren Nicholson of Mission Viejo, Calif., in round one and veteran Mark Niver of Phoenix, Ariz., in the semifinals.
She left first against Lucas but the engine in her dragster began misfiring at half track and slowed to 5.658 seconds at 257.73 mph as Lucas drove by for his second win in as many weeks at Infineon. He also won the Top Alcohol Dragster title at last week's FRAM/Autolite Nationals.
It was Ashley's second final round in three regional races this season. The second generation driver has won twice in national event competition (Gainesville, Fla., and Atlanta, Ga.) in the car owned and prepared by Jerry Darien and Ken Meadows.
