Pomona, Calif. - Jeff Arend strapped into his Checker, Schuck's, Kragen / Erie Educational Services Monte Carlo today, to make his first official lap as a member of Worsham Racing. Riding out tire shake for the first few feet of his debut lap, Arend quick-slapped the pedal, which cleared up the shake but caused his car to drop a cylinder on the right side. Sensing the car was underpowered, Arend clicked it off early and posted a 5.018 at only 265.22 mph, putting him 11th on the qualifying list after the first of four sessions here in Pomona.
"It went into some shake as soon as I hit the throttle, but it was one of those deals where I instinctively pedaled it and at the same time I was doing that I could also sense it was actually clearing up," Arend said. "Things happen ultra-fast in there, and you just have to react on what your instincts tell you to do, and my brain was telling me to do what I could to get it down the track. It was obviously not running on all eight down there, so then my other instinct kicked in; the one that tells me no to hurt the car. I knew that whatever number we ended up with, after having pedaled it and with it running on seven cylinders, wasn't going to be the number we need, so I lifted and we'll come back out here tomorrow to do it again. I do want to add that it's an honor to be out here, racing for real as a part of the Worsham team, representing the great people at Checker, Schuck's, Kragen Auto Parts and Erie Educational Services. Just wearing the uniform made it all seem more real, and it's a great feeling to be doing this."
