Jeff Arend knew the Saturday night pass at historic Raceway Park would be the most important lap during qualifying, and the ultimate key in such a scenario is to make sure the car goes to the other end under power. His blue Checker, Schuck's, Kragen Chevy did just that, though the safe and sound nature of the lap left him sitting 13th with a 4.841 on the board.
"The session got better as it went along, but unfortunately we were pretty far up toward the front of the line when we ran," Arend said. "The sun was still out, and it wasn't like you could just throw the kitchen sink at it and be safe out there, so we wanted to make sure we got it to the other end. It dropped a hole down track a ways, but basically it was a solid lap. Honestly, I think a lot of people will be able to improve tomorrow, because it shouldn't be a replay of Chicago here. The weather was great today, and should be tomorrow, so we'll come out here trying to lower that and I think we can. Tommy Johnson ran a 4.77 this afternoon, and although that was a great run and the class of the field in that session, it still shows you what can be done, at least in the late session tomorrow. Our goal is to step up, and we'll just see where that leaves us."
