AREND CLINGS TO 16th SPOT AFTER TWO SESSIONS

Jeff Arend was traveling with his teammate, Del Worsham, today so he therefore shared the stress of a long, and often delayed, day that saw the two Checker, Schuck's, Kragen drivers make it to the race track with but a few minutes to spare prior to the first qualifying session.

Then, on his first lap, the stress of his late arrival was only made worse by some misfortune. Running next to Kenny Bernstein, Arend was on pace to run a 5.03, or something in that neighborhood, when Bernstein nicked the final timing block and both teams' E.T.s had to be thrown out, since Bernstein was ahead at that point and his transgression set off Arend's final timer.

During Q2, Arend went end-to-end once again, this time landing a 4.943, which was a bit disappointing during a session where 4.80s and low 4.90s were the norm. He sits 16th after two sessions.

"The weather forecast for tomorrow is really good, with much less humidity and cooler temperatures, and we all know the weather forecasters are always right," Arend said, with a smile. "But seriously, if it's cooler and not so humid, we'll be able to step way up from this. We just didn't get it to run on all eight the whole way, and the E.T. suffered because of that. It started out pretty stressful today, so being in the 16th spot overnight isn't stressing me out nearly as much as it might. I know we can improve a great deal tomorrow, and we will do that. We have a good car, and with Del
sitting No. 1, we know what the track will hold and how to go out and do something like that. We'll be fine, and I'm already looking forward to tomorrow. I think we'll get here early."
