[coverattach=1]Greg Anderson and his Summit Racing team completed a very impressive qualifying effort on Saturday, capturing the second starting position for Sunday’s final eliminations of the O’Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals in Memphis, TN. Entering the day in the fourth position, Anderson posted the quickest20time in each of the final two sessions, highlighted by his 6.555-second time in the early session, which came with the top speed of qualifying at 210.97 mph.
As a result, he was able to gain two positions in the qualifying order and score an additional six bonus points, giving him a total of eight for the weekend. Naturally, Anderson was pleased with his performance and cautiously optimistic about his chances for race day.
“We definitely had a better day today than we’ve had over the last few weekends during qualifying,” said Anderson. “We ran well today, and made two nice runs with our gold Summit Racing Pontiac. It seems to be a very happy car.
“It had made great runs in Dallas, although we couldn’t understand why it didn’t run faster. Now it appears those high-temperature, high-humidity conditions just didn’t suit our engine package, because it’s just running better here. The car is still making good runs, but the scoreboard is reading faster times, so it obviously likes these conditions a lot better.
“The good news is that it should stay cool for the rest of the weekend, and these weather conditions seem to have allowed us to close the gap a little on Mike Edwards. Naturally, we’re pretty pleased about that, as well as being able to steal an extra six bonus qualifying points today – we just don’t know how those will work out at the end of the year.
“All in all, it was a very good day – we scored the most bonus points, we ran well, and we moved up to second. The only bad thing is that Jason (teammate Line) and I ended up on the same side of the ladder. Even so, it will be late in the day before we face each other, and if we do, we’re guaranteed to have a Summit Pontiac in the final. That’s our goal – to go out and do our jobs, so hopefully we can meet in the semis and put one of our cars in the final, giving us a chance to go for our second trophy in a row.”
