Qualifying for the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals got underway with a single session on Friday, with competitors and fans each challenged by the unseasonably high temperatures, which robbed the naturally-aspirated Pro Stock contingent of speed-producing horsepower. In addition, the heat also created a very slick racing surface, with many of the 28 competitors fighting to simply maintain traction.
Entering the event as the top two racers in the Full Throttle championship points standings, Summit Racing teammates Greg Anderson and Jason Line were the last pair to make an attempt, and made the most of the opportunity, each posting a 6.650-second elapsed time to tie for the top spot, with Anderson getting the nod based on his slightly faster 208.04 mph top speed to his stable mate’s 207.62 mph effort.
“My run wasn’t a particularly good one, but it was obviously enough to put us at the top for tonight,” said Anderson. “The conditions today were so brutal that a lot of people had a hard time just getting down the track. It’s a testament to everyone on this Summit Racing team that both cars were able to run as well as they did.
“With this being the last race before the start of the Countdown, we really want to make sure to hold on to the top two spots, so it also didn’t hurt to get those extra bonus points – after all, they could end up being the difference. I know the weather is supposed to change by Sunday, but there are no guarantees, so it’s nice to have this one in the bank. We’re going to bed with smiles on our faces.”
