Event: 42nd annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals
Location: Gainesville Raceway, Gainesville, Fla.
Day/Date: Friday, March 11, 2011
The sizeable crowd attending the opening day of qualifying at the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals enjoyed clear skies and cool temperatures, which produced record-setting runs in the Pro Stock category, including the first elapsed times in the 6.4-second range. In fact, three racers, including Greg Anderson in the Summit Racing Pontiac, tied for the quickest run in the category’s history, posting a 6.495-second elapsed time. With the tie-breaker in this instance being the top speed recorded during the run, Anderson found himself in the provisional third position midway through qualifying, leaving the four-time champion looking for even more during one of his final two attempts on Saturday.
“We should be excited running a 6.49, but everything is relative,” said Anderson. “If other cars are running the exact same time, the way we look at it, we are just doing our job, so even though we really are pleased with our Summit Racing Pontiac’s performance, we’re also somewhat disappointed. We would certainly like to have the record here at KB Racing. We’re proud of our operation and would love to have our name in the record books.
“Fortunately, we should have another chance tomorrow, and we’ll come back swinging. We know some things that we missed on the race cars and engines that could have made it faster, so we consider that an opportunity missed. Still, we have another shot in the morning and the best thing is that I have a great hot rod that is making nice smooth runs. We didn’t get all that we could out of it today, so we’ll see what we can do to tune it up tomorrow.”
