An Old Miller Drag racing commercial from 1974 (1 Viewer)

That was pretty cool, Joe. Geez, we don't even having Bud using Bernstein in TV ads today, 33 years later.

Looked like McEwen's Navy/English Leather top fueler. The car had #713 on it. I had that model when I was a kid. Obviously wasn't the Goose behind the wheel though when the driver's face is shown.

Sweet commercial nonetheless.

There was a Miller TV commercial after Larry Dixon won his 2nd Championship. I saw all of 2 times is all! It showed Dixon's car staging, then you hear a voice saying "Feel The Earth shake.........Smell the Nitro!" Then it showed a bunch of fans on their feet, than the car takes off with the fans looking downtrack. An Awesome commercial, I can't believe it didn't get more airtime....

I remember that commercial! Man, that brings back some memories for me. Thanks for posting the link, Joe.

Okay, Name that drag strip....
(caught the overpass in the first shot)
(Play Ground By the Finish line bleachers)
(Where I joined the 1000ft club)
(Where I made my first pass)
(Mr. Jean raced there, so did Mike English)
(Speed Shop under the Main Pit-side Stands)
(All Paved pits, with 'trees')
(I-5 just north of the 405)
(El Toro MCAS was 'next door neighbor)

High Life, The Champagne of Bottled Beers....

It's time to bring back those classics.

no, it's time for the nhra marketing dept. to open the eyes of
madison avenue so we mite have 'new' drag racing commercials
to watch and talk about.
this old miller ad is proof of where drag racing used to be.

Lets see what kind of influence this HD Partners deal provides, I'm not optimistic...

Yep, that's what I was referring to Mike (Don't call me Bruce) Larson :D:)
I know what you mean. I expect to see that new NAPA guy in more than a few commercials. With the loss of Dale Earnhardt JR, maybe there's a possibility that BUD could throw us a bone as well.

It's quite a quandry though. I look at the PBR (Professional Bull Riders). The good: They have a TV package deal and a network dedicated to Live events, re-airs, and feature shows on the PBR. The bad: It's the VS. Network.

Although the VS. network is one of the most watched channels in my home (DirecTV 603) it may not be in others.

Point being, would this better for the NHRA to have a channel with less notariety than ESPN2, but more aggressive in showing the NHRA. Aren't we a smart society at least when it comes to the remote.

Hell I don't know, I guess we should all be happy that the Arizona vs. Stanford Lady Softball game didn't run over to much on any given Sunday!?!

Steve,
maybe it's time to revisit your idea.
many times this has been argued here on the mater, and inevitably
the subject gets around to how big ESPN2 is, how many households ESPN2
reaches, and furthermore ESPN2 is usually on most basic TV packages,
as SPEED and/or other sports channels sometimes/usually are not.

BUT lately the programming on ESPN2 has been less than stellar.
continuous reruns of 'the contender' (i think ESPN is getting paid to air?)
continuous reruns of 'world series of poker' (paid by Harrah's entertainment)
continuous reruns of 'bronx is burning' (filler by ESPN? no $$ coming in?)
what seems to be missing is continuous NCAA basketball which i
think at this time of the year has been commonplace on ESPN2.
my point is, are audiences changing so as to effect what sports ESPN2
will televise on their own in hopes of making $$ with advertising?

if niche' sports will only garner a select TV audience, i would think that
the NHRA TV broadcasts better start showing better 'nielsen ratings'
soon, or why throw money away to ESPN2?
maybe let a smaller network go to work FOR you(NHRA) - mite be surprised
with the results.

i know i would upgrade my TV package if a network not on my basic
package started to air the NHRA nat. events.....hopefully along with other
NHRA related shows during the week.

I'm with you here Mike. The PBR is my favorite form of sport. Period. For a time, DISH TV dropped the VS. (then Outdoor Life) Network. I was so happy I had DirectTV. 95% of all PBR events are shown on VS., with the others shown on NBC, or FOX. To add to that. Prior to each event showing, VS. will air a show called PBR Total Bull. A 30 minute show the features the bulls or the riders, or the stock contractors. I don't know. I don't have the answers.

I don't think one can evaluate the IRHA's coverage on SPEED and relate it to what the NHRA may look like on another network since it's my belief that the 2 products on a whole are far apart. Not that I don't like the IHRA or watch it. It's just different.

But the TV NHRA product has come so far since the 80's, it's hard for me to complain.

So what's it gonna take to start the Quater Mile Network??

NHRA sinks their money into producing the lion's share of the broadcasts (and in turn recieves the most airtime, with the ability to show classic races and 30 minute programs that focus on the racers and their sponsors companies..); IHRA can sink their TV cash into it for a proportional amount of airtime, and NMCA, PSCA and the rest of the smaller HRAs can buy time based on their budget (lots of TV racing taking place at 2:30AM instead of infomercials :D), and if it goes straight and fast (salt lakes, jr. racing, etc.), it could find a home on this network.

Airtime based on a 15-18 hour day to start, from Noon to 3-6AM, with the balance of the remaining time being sold to HSN-type programming ("Yes Bob, the price on these crate Hemis is not $2995, but until they are all gone, for the special bottom line price of $1999!!!")...

For all the cash being dropped into the pockets of networks that could care less whether we are drag racing or log rolling, a bit more control on how we are presented to the public might be a good thing..
