Second annual CompetitionPlus.com War Stories Showdown Returns This Month …

At first, the concept was simple. Gather a group of former and current racers, sprinkle in a few industry notables and media types and allow them to tell their greatest “war” stories from back in the day.

Then it became the incessant desire to compete which inspired the bearers of these outlandish tales to ratchet up the competition to a rather intense level.

Thus the annual War Stories Showdown was born.

Sixteen competitors will square off in a month-long competition beginning on Monday, December 15 and ending on January 15th when a champion will be crowned.

CompetitionPlus.com selects the 16 participants and the readers provide an initial vote to “seed” the field of competition. The competition is paired on the standard NHRA professional ladder.

The first round opens on December 22 with each “storied race” gaining three days of vote time. The winner of each match advances to the next round where they will tell a new story against a new opponent.

There is no qualifying. The mere fact each individual is invited is qualification enough. The is race day right from the start.

The inaugural War Stories Showdown drew over 100,000 readers, or in racing terms, spectators.

Scotty Cannon won the 2007 event by defeating Roy Hill in the final round.

There were some entertaining stories such as:

Gary Scelzi’s interesting tale of how a motorhome sewer incident got the best of him.

Bob Glidden’s story of how wife Etta demanded he get some sleep between the 1980 NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle, Wa., and the NHRA World Finals. She gave him a sleeping pill (or maybe two) and he slept for three days, while she and the boys visited the beach with him asleep in the bed of the truck. He woke up with unexplained sunburn.

Roy Hill explained how a misunderstanding at the grill and lack of sleep ended up feeding a well known NASCAR family their favorite dog.

And what would be a War Story competition without at least one Scotty Cannon fight story?

Beginning on December 8, CompetitionPlus.com will bring flashbacks of the 2008 event in the news section.

Early competitors for the 2008 competition include the team of Bob & Etta Glidden [2007 Semi-finalist], John Force [2007 No. 1 qualifier], Gary Scelzi [2007 Semi-finalist], Four-time Top Fuel champion Shirley Muldowney, Noted drag racing photographer Steve Reyes, former IHRA Vice President Ted Jones and drag racing photographer turned nitro pilot Whit Bazemore just to name a few.

The stories are PG-13 in rating with the only rule a mandate there will be no discussion of felonious acts (unprosecuted ones) and you can’t use a story about your opponent on your opponent.

Beyond that, the gloves are off.

Ok, based off of the early entry list, the initial odds sheet 'mysteriously' showed up in my e mail box. Now that he is 'retired' the wild thang going off at 3-1 is the odds on favorite to claim this years title. However if your looking for a good value bet, dont overlook the 10-1 underdog Photographer Steve Reyes. Those 'shutterbugs' can spin a yarn:)

looking for a sucker bet, you dont have to look far. Due to the Pg 13 rating, i dont believe second favorite (going off at 7-2) John Force will be much of a threat this year.

As soon as we have a full roster i will post a full odds sheet:)

I still pi$$ed off that I missed the 15 minutes the winning entry was posted before it was pulled last year.

Sherman, let's just leave some things alone. <smile>

Timmah, don't count out Force. He was fired up already called me twice this morning raring to get started.

lookin forward to these.....really enjoyed them last year

ah but Bobby, by 'calling out the man' that might inspire him to really 'bring it'. You know everyone checks what we say on the 'mater' daily:)

waiting for the ladder before i post the odds:) getting assistance from the good people at the 'station' casinos for how to properly handicap this competition!
For the horse racing lovers out there, we will also offer exacta / super-fecta wagering as well:)

The one you have to watch is that Waterbed Fred fella.

....hey bobby ....how bout Coil for a story teller...seen it all AND ran with Jungle himself...millions of stories...!:p

,,,AND...why were "the final round" stories pulled so fast...
