Second annual CompetitionPlus.com War Stories Showdown Returns This Month …
At first, the concept was simple. Gather a group of former and current racers, sprinkle in a few industry notables and media types and allow them to tell their greatest “war” stories from back in the day.
Then it became the incessant desire to compete which inspired the bearers of these outlandish tales to ratchet up the competition to a rather intense level.
Thus the annual War Stories Showdown was born.
Sixteen competitors will square off in a month-long competition beginning on Monday, December 15 and ending on January 15th when a champion will be crowned.
CompetitionPlus.com selects the 16 participants and the readers provide an initial vote to “seed” the field of competition. The competition is paired on the standard NHRA professional ladder.
The first round opens on December 22 with each “storied race” gaining three days of vote time. The winner of each match advances to the next round where they will tell a new story against a new opponent.
There is no qualifying. The mere fact each individual is invited is qualification enough. The is race day right from the start.
The inaugural War Stories Showdown drew over 100,000 readers, or in racing terms, spectators.
Scotty Cannon won the 2007 event by defeating Roy Hill in the final round.
There were some entertaining stories such as:
Gary Scelzi’s interesting tale of how a motorhome sewer incident got the best of him.
Bob Glidden’s story of how wife Etta demanded he get some sleep between the 1980 NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle, Wa., and the NHRA World Finals. She gave him a sleeping pill (or maybe two) and he slept for three days, while she and the boys visited the beach with him asleep in the bed of the truck. He woke up with unexplained sunburn.
Roy Hill explained how a misunderstanding at the grill and lack of sleep ended up feeding a well known NASCAR family their favorite dog.
And what would be a War Story competition without at least one Scotty Cannon fight story?
Beginning on December 8, CompetitionPlus.com will bring flashbacks of the 2008 event in the news section.
Early competitors for the 2008 competition include the team of Bob & Etta Glidden [2007 Semi-finalist], John Force [2007 No. 1 qualifier], Gary Scelzi [2007 Semi-finalist], Four-time Top Fuel champion Shirley Muldowney, Noted drag racing photographer Steve Reyes, former IHRA Vice President Ted Jones and drag racing photographer turned nitro pilot Whit Bazemore just to name a few.
The stories are PG-13 in rating with the only rule a mandate there will be no discussion of felonious acts (unprosecuted ones) and you can’t use a story about your opponent on your opponent.
Beyond that, the gloves are off.
