2010 - What Do You Think It Will Look Like?

1000ft at some tracks, and 1320ft at others?
Crowd numbers increasing / decreasing?
ADRL's popularity growing to rival NHRA?
Larger Fields in Pro Categories?
Who Will Return, who will retire?
Which Sponsors will return / leave / enter sport for the first time?

Well as long as we are guessing here....
1,000ft probably for 2010,
perhaps 1320 at some tracks, but doubtful,
slightly larger pro fields,
Hillary Will returns,
also Scelzi, but just part time,
Nostalgia Popularity Grows

If the NHRA returns to 1320ft and does not neuter the nitro motors you will see an increase in attendance. If they decide to go with the nitro "car of tomorrow" the sport will join NASCAR in da toilet !

What will 2010 look like? We will all have flying cars, our cities will all be platforms in the middle of the ocean, robots will do all of our housework, all of our food will come in pill form, we will communicate telepathically in one universal language, illness will have been genetically engineered out of our DNA so there will be no need of medicine or doctors, we will vacation on the moon, and there will be a colony on Mars. I just hope I live to see it ...

(seriously though, remember when 2010 sounded like an impossible time in the future?)

Thanks for the laugh this morning :)
You nailed the lyrics to one of my favorite songs.

and we'll all work for Spacely Sprockets :)

Sorry for the minor threadjack.

But for 2010, I think we will find out at Indy, that is when NHRA traditionally makes their announcements. I don't think they found what they were looking for with the "spec motor" test ... and the lack of parts to test definitely slowed them down ... so my guess is not much will change on the track for 2010.

1. A place called the Boar's Nest across from Atlanta Dragway. (closed on Sunday).

2.Robby Gordon in a Funny Car :D

3. Sweeping legislation passed where drivers who announce they are retiring and sell mucho "retirement/final season" merchandise, can't earn money off merchandise sold after comeback!!

4. Jack Daniel's as a sponsor in the NHRA

  • If a fuel car runs 1320' in 2010, it will only be in testing.
  • Crowds will be marginally higher, unless NHRA marketing can pull off a miracle, but the economic rebound will help a little bit
  • Never seen ADRL, can't comment on that
  • Some new/returning pros, but 20+ car fuel fields will remain a Pomona/Indy phenomenon
  • Connie will get another car out there somehow, and Connolly will find a ride. Hot Rod, Herbert, Whit won't. Worry about Kenny/Brandon and CoryMac.
  • There will be more random/questionable/"where's the money really from?" sponsors out there, but the Tide/M&M/etc. mainstream sponsors will still shun NHRA. Nonetheless smart, creative, marketable people like TPed, Clay, and Connie will cobble together deals and will be out there.

My hope is for the same motor and that they will allow tracks with X amount of shutdown to run the full 1320 and tracks below that to run 1000. I suspect though that they will stay at 1000'

My other hope/dream/mission/quest/goal is that they throw out the c.....oh we all know what I want :)

I don't see the ADRL catching the NHRA yet, unless they start adding drgasters and/or Funny Cars...hmmm aren't there some IHRA funny cars looking for a place to race. Although unless they go at least 1000' with nitro then its not worth it. It appears that they can learn a thing a two and should at least pay attention to them but they're not even close enough to even be seen in any rearview mirror.

Returns- well Ford looks like they will be coming into Pro Stock big which is good. Hopefully they other car mfg will be able to maintain a healthy number of good cars as well.
Hoping Hillary makes it back out full time. I'd also like Mel, TJ, JR and Densham to be in the mix. I can easily see Scelzi making several races next year. Maybe him and Jim Head split driving time
Still no announcement or news from the Bernstein camp on who they will run with next year...yes its early but usually something has leaked by now...makes me nervous

Crowds and Fields will really depend on the economy. Yes NHRA can do things to help entice....or at least quit chasing us away but right now money is the #1 factor

at least until 2012 more of us will be under the thumb of our ever
expanding gov't. - then if we wake up we can turn the tide, if we do not,
look for many things, including motorsports, to nearly vanish into the past.

2010 nhra - virtually unchanged.
remember asking team member back in early 90's the similar questions......
'is the sport growing, shrinking?' - answer seemed to always be 'we're
holding our own'; don't see how much has changed to the present.
racers come, racers go.........same with sponsors.
it's a niche' sport (entertainment) - the 30 yr. budweiser deal is an anomaly.

Did the government already leave its fingerprint on the NHRA - The Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement - not sure of the details but it limited tobacco companies to one brand name sponsorhip per year.

Remember Winston Drag Racing, Gary Scelzi and the Winston dragster, or Bazemore and the Smokin' Joes.

I agree with ya Mike- it is a niche sport, with a major league appetite for cash. Those two things won't mix together, so one of them has to give.

Sadly enough (well, not really ;)), it looks like it will never get to stick-and- ball status. We'll still get bumped by The Deuce, the local news broadcasts will still mistake what numbnuts on the street do for what our sport is about, and the economy will keep the large money players scared to take a chance on, what they will ultimately discover, is the most dedicated fan base in sports.

All I ask for in the next couple of years is 1320.... Watching old Diamond P races on video, and I have to tell ya, 5.20 floppers and 4.80 diggers are truly OK with me...

This is a fantastic point Martin. If they turned off the scoreboards, 95% of us standing on the fence could not discern a 4.55 run from a 4.80 run. In my personal opinion, 300 MPH is the magic number. The ET doesn't mean much to the novice/casual fan, as most of the population won't ever make a pass down the quarter mile, but we all drive everyday and all of our cars have speedometers and those speeds are regulated. So every John Q. Chucklehead can see 300 MPH and go WOW. The cars will still be a visceral draw with the noise and the flames and the sweet smell of spent nitro. So if knocking 30 MPH off the speed and a half second off the ET means we can go back to the quarter mile, I am OK with it.

Personally, I'm just so glad we're going to have some FORD pro stockers I don't even really care how screwed up the rest of it is! :D

And some pretty bad-a$s Ford Pro Stockers, engineering-wise, from what I hear.

So bad-a$s, that you KNOW those California Ivory Tower folks are gonna mess it up...;)

another potential future 'bad-ass' combo written about lately is the
ADRL - tim grose/quain stott DOHC nitro doorslammer.
anyone heard if they are running yet?
