It was initially the 100 Greatest War Films, but l've narrowed it down to the Top Ten. There were contributions from a great cast of actors and directors.

10 - Bridge On The River Kwai.

9 - Blackhawk Down.

8 - Zulu.

7 - A Bridge Too Far.

6 - Platoon.

5 - Full Metal Jacket.

4 - Schlinder's List.

3 - The Great Escape.

2 - Apocalypse Now.

1 - Saving Private Ryan.

My favourite is Saving Private Ryan, what is yours?

I would have put "The Longest Day" somewhere in the top ten. Dunno if M*A*S*H qualifies and "Catch 22" deserves consideration. Both capture the madness of war.

If they do this again next year, I would expect Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers" to make the top ten, it's an excellent movie.

Personally I cant stand Saving Private Ryan. I just hate that movie. I think when the American let the one guy go and didnt kill him and then that guy turned around and stabbed our guy who just had let him go and then just pulled the knife down him gutting him, I got up and left the theatre.

What??? No Patton? that is the greatest War Movie of all time, PT 109 ranks pretty high too, in my book.

Dont know if we are talking about only certain wars but Braveheart is on of my all time fav movies.

All the War Films you've mentioned were in the 100 Greatest War Films, but they weren't in the Top Ten.

Toss out Apocalypse now and Zulu, replace them with The Longest Day and Das Boot and add Tora Tora Tora and The Blue Max (One of Peppard's best films ever.) as 10a 10b and I'd be happy.

That's not a bad list, it's just too damn hard to narrow it down to 10. I tend to think of the ground-breaking war movies such as Apocalypse Now, Tora Tora Tora, Patton, Saving Private Ryan, Platoon and such as real milestones for the genre. With this idea in mind, the movie that I find is conspicuous in its absence is Gods And Generals.

I'm a Patton fan myself. Tora Tora Tora is pretty awesome too. And I loved Saving Private Ryan - the scene where the kid lets the German go is part of war... believe it or not, it's pretty damn scary out there. Sure, it pissed me off, but I understand.

As a side note, though it's not a movie as much as it is a mini-series I think we have to give honorable mention to Band of Brothers - if that don't make your heart proud, I don't know what will.

Here here!!! Some of the best WW2 drama I have EVER seen, bar none. I'd love to see it on the big screen, if that could be done. I don't get HBO, and so didn't get a chance to watch it until it came out on DVD, and was simply blown away.

Very well done drama.

I`ve got 'Band of Brothers' on DVD and try to watch it every Memorial weekend, but we didn`t watch it this past May for some reason...might have to give it a look this weekend. My dad recently bought Winters book 'Beyond Band of Brothers' and as soon as he`s finished with it, it`s making its way to our house.
