SGMP To Become World's Longest Drag Strip, Host 1/2-Mile Races

SGMP's Ozzy Moya and Blake Hutchison of the WannaGoFast 1/2-mile series struck a unique deal this week. The popular facility will be lengthened to 5,600-feet, making it purpose-built for 1/2-mile drag racing.

there are some tracks that run 1mile and 1 1/2mile time trials. BIG RED the 69 camaro has gone 266mph

There is a track in Casa Grande, Arizona (kinda between Phoenix & Tucson) that runs a 1 mile course. Very popular w/ drivers & you see all kinds of cars. Exotics, Nova w/ blown big block, etc. Have seen photos of the cars. Would like to go by the finish line & see what that looks like. I agree with John, it's sometimes hard to see past the 1/8 mile & have to look at the winner picker sign to see who won.

The Standing Mile events as you describe as a rule are not a head to head competition. They are contested more like the speed trails at the salt flats. One at a time and just see how fast you can get going from a standing start.

Brian Lohnes puts some of these type events on.

This is my take on it.
NHRA refusing to run 1/4 Nitro.
1/2 Mile track would allow a LOT of shut down, on an already decent shut down area at SGMP.
He just may go rogue and run a 1/4 mile Nitro race.
Larry "Spiderman" McBride did go 264 last fall there on a Top Fuel Motorcycle....
