POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 10, 2006) – Rising Top Fuel star “Hot” Rod Fuller blasted his David Powers-owned Valvoline Top Fuel dragster to the second quickest pass Friday at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona to improve his position on the second day of qualifying at the 2006 NHRA season-finale. The Las Vegas resident opened qualifying on Thursday at the 42nd annual Auto Club of Southern California Finals with a solid 4.537-second pass, placing him fourth in the 16-car order. On Friday’s only qualifying effort, the three-time NHRA Top Fuel winner used a stout Lee Beard tune-up to improve his position when he clocked a run of 4.509 seconds at 323.89 mph. It was the second quickest pass of the session. Fuller has qualified second once this season (Seattle).
“The run felt really good, but the sun was in my eyes and I clicked it off about 15-feet before the finish line,” Fuller said. “It probably would have run about 4.501. I need to make sure I have my Impact! Racing shield secured better so the sun doesn’t bother me tomorrow. That 4.50 puts us in a good position for Saturday. Now, we can really try and run a 4.40.” Fuller and the Beard-led Valvoline team look to maintain their solid qualifying position and work on a race-day tune-up for Sunday’s final eliminations when nitro qualifying resumes with sessions scheduled for Noon and 3:30 p.m.
(PT) on Saturday afternoon at Pomona.
