INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 1, 2007) - TJ Zizzo is showing off some new colors this weekend with the Peak Antifreeze / O'Reilly Auto Parts Top Fuel Dragster, he's also sporting a new career best elapsed time of 4.578 seconds at 322.11 mph. The attempt earned Zizzo and his team the 14th provisional spot for the 53rd running of the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. Teams have two more qualifying attempts scheduled for tomorrow.
"Frankly I was surprised," said Zizzo. "We're out here with the best teams in the world and don't normally run 85% (nitro methane). To be honest, we only half expected to qualify. But this is a great shot in the arm for our team. It's been three years since we ran those kinds of numbers."
While Zizzo enjoys his current position, he knows that two additional qualifying attempts on Sunday could change the order for Monday's elimination rounds. "There's a lot of good teams not in this show yet, so anything could happen," Zizzo reflected as he and Bruce Litton sat on the tailgate of his truck. "Right now I'm sitting here with Bruce Litton, talking about life in general. We're going to enjoy some pizza with our crew and see what we can do tomorrow."
Litton was quick to remind Zizzo that he's currently one spot better than him in qualifying. "We just hope it's TJ Zizzo and Bruce Litton in the finals," Litton joked.
