WORSHAM'S STRONG FINALE SETS THE STAGE FOR MONDAY

Del Worsham saved what very well might have been his best lap for last, running a beautiful 4.868 during the final session at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. Although the E.T. was well short of the 4.785 he used to earn the 7th spot in the race field, it was clearly a massive run for the conditions, late on a sun-baked and warm Sunday afternoon. John Force was the only driver to outrun Worsham in Q5, posting a 4.856, which was also a thing of beauty, though it was not quite good enough to bump into the field. Force, Bob Gilbertson, Tommy Johnson, Tony Bartone, Cruz Pedregon, and Bob Bode were the unlucky six who failed to make the field.

"We were on one pretty much like that final lap during the earlier run today, but it sheared a blower stud and lost boost," Worsham said. "So, I figured if we could keep it in one piece, it would run something close to low for the session. Force's run was a masterpiece, and I feel bad for him since he didn't make the show here, but it was really pretty impossible to run better 4.82 out there today, and that's what the bump spot was.

"Our goal was to find our good Indy combination, so that we know we can go out there on Monday and get it done. I feel like we did exactly that, and it all led up to that last run. Now, we'll just have to attack a very tough opponent in round one, and see if we can parlay this tune-up into some round wins at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. It's one step at a time, man, but we're going to go for it."

Worsham will face Gary Scelzi in round one.
