WORSHAM SPEEDS TO No. 3 SPOT AFTER LONG DRAWN-OUT DAY

Del Worsham was closing in on the 10-hour mark at Virginia Motorsports Park, and had done very little to keep his mind occupied, when the weather finally allowed the professional classes to make one solitary run on Friday. Racing on a very green race track, every crew chief had to roll the tuning dice in their own way and they could not be sure of what they were facing. While most in the class were unable to negotiate the full 1,320, Worsham powered to a solid 4.858 at a very strong 311.20 mph, landing him in the No. 3 spot after one day.

"That's about what we were trying to do, actually," Worsham said. "We all went up there not sure what we were going to be facing, because the rain really caused problems and we had seen that a lot of the rubber had peeled off the track. It took a while, but the NHRA track prep crew really did an amazing job considering what they were up against. Fortunately, we were far enough back in line to watch a few pairs, and it was pretty easy to see there was some grip out there. We didn't turn all the knobs to 11 or anything like that, we just wanted to put a good solid lap on the board so that we can try to step it up a little more on Saturday. It was dark, there was condensation all over the car, and it pretty exciting, but I'm very happy with that run, and we know we can play with it a little more tomorrow."
