NORWALK, Ohio (February 5, 2010) – With one of the largest debut weekends in IHRA history in the books the newly redesigned Nitro Jam series now shifts its focus to one of the most exciting stops on its 10-event North American tour – State Capitol Raceway’s Mardi Gras Nitro Jam.

Last year’s event at State Capitol Raceway was an overwhelming success with a packed house both Saturday and Sunday watching Bruce Litton and many others hoist the coveted Ironman trophy. This year, after an incredible opening weekend at Palm Beach International Raceway in late January, even bigger things are expected when Nitro Jam rolls into town March 6-7.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Nitro Jam back to State Capitol Raceway. We had a huge turnout last year and with the new changes this season I think we will see even bigger things from this event,” said State Capitol Raceway owner Lanny Lewis. “The IHRA always puts on an incredible show and with the new classes and changes fans are in for an incredible weekend of racing.”

Kicking off the 2010 Mardi Gras Nitro Jam weekend will be two days of sportsman racing and the third opportunity of the new year for sportsman drivers to qualify for the Tournament of Champions. The new format is a dream come true for sportsman drivers and spectators alike as the seven classes making up the IHRA sportsman ranks run uninterrupted throughout the day leading up to the world’s largest nitro thrill show Saturday and Sunday evening.

With sportsman racers owning the day, the stars of Nitro Jam will light up the night with nearly two dozen nitro-burning dragsters and funny cars, wild doorslammer racing, the “Cool Bus” wheelstanding school bus, the Super Shockwave jet truck and a spectacular fireworks display both Saturday and Sunday.

“Baton Rouge is a perfect example of how our new format works. We will continue to have our core classes, but we are able to add new and exciting classes to the schedule to enhance each individual event,” said IHRA President Aaron Polburn. “Fans in Baton Rouge wanted doorslammer racing so we will give them some incredible door car action on top of our nitro show.”

Outlaw Pro Modified racing will be the newest addition to the Nitro Jam schedule joining the stars of Top Fuel, Pro Fuel and Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car.

Outlaw Pro Modified racing will be the newest addition to the Mardi Gras Nitro Jam lineup.

While Top Fuel has always been a fan favorite with its four second, 320-mph runs, Nitro Jam’s two newest nitro classes wowed fans at Palm Beach earlier in the year with flame-spewing side-by-side runs. IHRA’s quickest and fastest sportsman racers will also be a part of the Nitro Jam experience as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster drivers compete in elimination rounds on Saturday followed by the Harland Sharp Elite 8 shootout between the top qualifiers in each class on Sunday.

Louisiana fans will also be treated to Fan Fest Saturday and Sunday prior to the start of the Nitro Jam show. Fan Fest was a huge hit in its debut earlier in the year as fans were able to interact with the series like never before.

Along with seeing the cars and stars of the series up close and personal, fans were also able to participate in the experience with a chance to sign Palm Beach winner Bobby Lagana’s Top Fuel dragster, compete against others in a reaction time tournament, pick the pairings for the first round of professional eliminations and witness the first ever Nitro Earthquake as all of the nitro-burning vehicles on the property warmed up at the same time.

And State Capitol Raceway fans will receive an extra treat this season as the unique flair of Louisiana and the Mardi Gras spirit is incorporated into the weekend long festivities.

“Mardi Gras Nitro Jam is an event unlike any other on the Nitro Jam schedule. There is just something special about Louisiana and Mardi Gras that brings out the best in everyone and sets the backdrop for one heck of an event,” said Polburn.

Tickets are on sale now for Mardi Gras Nitro Jam and can be purchased by calling 561-622-1400 or by clicking on the link below. Tickets are just $25 if purchased in advance and just $10 for children. Parking and an all-access pit pass are free with admission.

Don’t miss your chance to be a part of this history-making event March 6-7 at State Capitol Raceway.
