Winternationals Pro-Nitro qualifying cut back

This news was released at the end of last season and is already being discussed on the Pomona car count thread.

Why would ANYONE consider this to be a "CUTBACK"?

I could be wrong but, every other event (maybe not Indy?) schedules 2 Pro Sessions each (PRO) day.

I've gone to Pomona 3 times now (that's a big deal from CT) but never considered attending Thursday or Friday because of the abbreviated schedule.

I would love to see a 2013 web-link to the announcement made about this matter?;)

Here you are sir. From the NHRA website itself. August 29th, 2013. It was announced during the U.S. Nationals.

http://nhra.com/story/2013/8/29/2014-mello-yello-schedule/

And from said article...

The 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series kicks off with the NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, Feb. 6-9. It was also announced that the event will move to a more traditional three-day format for Mello Yello Series competitors, featuring two qualifying runs Friday and Saturday, followed by eliminations Sunday. The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will begin racing Thursday, Feb. 6.

All the rest of the races are Q1 / Q2 Friday Q3/Q4 Saturday with Indy being the exception.

Noise was the reason for the Q1 Thursday Q2 Friday format at Pomona in the first place, that is fact.

Fire the next pair.

I never liked the Thu. Pro session. As many times as I`ve been to Pomona, I`ve probably gone on Thu. maybe two or three times. Even when I lived down there we never went because of work. About time I say

What's the big deal? Instead of two one session days (thurs, fri) you get two sessions on Friday. Same as all but one event(Indy).

Everything about this change is a win for the fans, the teams and pumping out the Porta-Johns. The Thursday session was often plagued with many aborted runs since there is no racing since the Finals and very little rubber on the Pomona Raceway surface. The track prep crew should be pressure washing the entire surface in the next week or so. The change is a smart move and will save everyone money.

I'm glad that there is a positive feed back from the fans. I know a lot of times change is not accepted very well, but maybe this time it will be different. I don't see any downside to this change for the teams at all. The tech line can be pretty long at Pomona since all the teams are getting all there bodies teched so this will give them an extra day to get all of this done before they have to run on Fri. Plus, the tickets are only $12.00 on Thur compared to $52.00 on Fri and it gives the sportsman fans a chance to come out and watch their classes without the nitro cars messing up their show.

When I lived down by Pomona, I never went to the Winters, because no bikes, but at the finals I would go on Thursday to see nitro qualifying. No crowds, you could get something from the snack bar without a long wait. Park closer, etc.

I wouldn't go the rest of the weekend unless I had a sponsored rider going for the championship.

Just a thought, we all know that the fairplex runs the show and they could have changed everything. No PRO session on Thursday means a whole less parking people, fewer concession stands open, less security, and the list could go on and on

C
It (along with every other race) needs to be two days. It will happen in the next 5 or so years. #guaranteed

Could the track owners/promoters give up that third day of gate, parking, concessions etc. and still make the event as profitable? The only way they could, would be to jack up the prices on everything.

When the NHRA uses Pomona Raceway, they get none of the parking fees nor any percentage of the concessions as is the deal with other venues. Both parking and concessions belong to the Fairplex Board. It not as sinister as most fans think.

The previous Thursday and Friday sessions were due to the curfew restrictions. It was easier to run one session each day then face have to cancel part of a second session due to the curfew. I believe the restrictions were renegotiated to allow more time on Friday and thus the Thursday session could be scraped. The local community isn't thrilled with the races and I fear one day Pomona may be gone altogether. Until then...I'll take whatever days I can get.
