Pomona, Calif. - You couldn’t ask much more from the KB Racing LLC-owned, Kalitta Motorsports-managed team and their driver Hillary Will, as they rebounded from a violent crash in a testing accident last Saturday in Las Vegas to qualify No. 12 in the 16-car field for the season-opening 47th annual NHRA CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals.
The crew – Jason Davis, Scott Finnis, James Holifield, Chris Glass, Mike LaJoice, and Mac Savage – led by crew chief Jim Oberhofer and asst. crew chief Troy Fasching, worked long hours just to get the KB Racing Top Fuel dragster back on the track in time for the Winternationals. There isn’t a harder working crew in drag racing than this group from Kalitta Motorsports.
“Our team has already overcome a lot of adversity this year but what may be a set back for some teams becomes a challenge for this KB Racing team. An accident such as the crash in Las Vegas only makes our team stronger, more determined, and hungrier than ever for a win,” said Will during the CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals.
In Friday’s single qualifying session, Will, who was uninjured in the Vegas crash, covered the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona quarter-mile in 4.561 seconds at 320.28 mph. Building on that run, today she lowered the elapsed time to 4.545 seconds to claim the No. 12 spot on the final qualifying ladder. On that final run she stopped the speed trap clocks at 322.81 mph.
“Last Saturday at this time we weren’t quite in as good a mood as we are now,” said Will. “All things considered, we’re pretty happy where we are. We’re improving every time we run and so we’ll keep that rhythm going tomorrow all the way to the winner’s circle.”
Will faces her Kalitta Motorsports teammate Doug Kalitta in the opening round of eliminations tomorrow. Kalitta placed his Mac Tools dragster in the No. 4 position with a pass of 4.495 seconds at 323.50 mph.
