Wilkerson takes the No. 14 qualifying position

RICHMOND, Saturday: On both of today's qualifying runs Tim Wilkerson improved on his Friday night pass and will take his Levi, Ray & Shoup (LRS) Chevrolet Impala SS Funny Car to race day at the Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals from the No. 14 qualifying position.

On his first pass, Wilkerson ran 4.890 at 302.08 mph and then in the second session, he ran 4.972 at 301.94. And even though Wilkerson dropped a cylinder on each pass, he looks to tomorrow with high hopes.

"On our first run, it spun the tires on the top end," explained Wilkerson. "It smoked the tires at about 3.8 seconds into the run and when it did that it dropped a hole. But that was all right because it was on a good run. On the second run it run through the clutch when I zipped the timing at it, at about two seconds, and it put out a hole. We just need to get a little more clutch on it early and go out and swing for the fence tomorrow."

Wilkerson will face off against Mike Ashley in the first-round. The two have met four other times this year, with Ashley getting the win on three occasions. Wilkerson thinks tomorrow should be his turn to win.

"We're going to go for it against Mike tomorrow," said Wilkerson. "We've got nothing to lose and if we can go out there and give him a run for the money, it should be fun. We sure would like to win some rounds tomorrow for Dick (Levi) and LRS. You know that's what we're here for and hopefully we'll start by getting by Mike."
