Where's Paul???

Tuned into ESPN3 after start and there's no Paul Page in the booth. There've been a few opportunities for an explanation from Dave Rieff, who's in his seat, but I haven't heard anything (though I may have missed it). Any one know?

whatever happen, i'm guessin' maybe it wasnt pleasant else, like u said, someone would have mentioned it !

I'm wondering if he'll be doing the voice over for the telecast. In the mean time, I'm lovin' the ESPN3 coverage! :)

I doubt that...Dave Rieff and Mike Dunn have been calling it live, which is really the only way coverage of any sporting event can be done...even for later broadcast.

They just mentioned that Paul is out due to illness (i.e. under the weather)...

I have to say that I like Rieff more than Page, but he's no shining star either...it's probably a tougher job than one would think to do live announcing for a TV audience of competition that changes so fast. They've got to fill the void with commentary of very unpredictable events...

TV audience or not, I really admire those in the tower calling the event action.

They gotta see the race, analyze the numbers, and come up with coherent sentences that not only the tech savvy can understand but the fans in the stand can relate to.

I've seen Alan, Bob Frey and Unk in the tower calling the events and the are going from the monitor to the track to the monitor and make it sound pretty good.

I couldn't do it.

It's my understanding that Mike and Dave are NOT in the tower. They are usually in a production trailer watching on small screens. At least that's the way it is in Pomona. I've heard Mike and Paul mention that they don't have the best vantage point. As an aside, I must admit I was at least an hour into the broadcast on ESPN2 before I realized that hey, there's no Paul Page! I think Dave Reiff is doing a great job!

Right, they are in a "studio" that is a semi-trailer usually located just past the finish line (for sound purposes). It's a tiny space, with them, a backdrop, a camera guy, a director and/or producer, and poor Lewis Bloom jammed in a corner.

And I think Dave's doing a great job!

Amen. I have a ton of respect for the guys that make it seem so easy. There's no way I could ever do that job.

Paul, wishing you a speedy recovery. :)

nothing against Paul Paige as human being, and I don't wish illness on anybody...but my gawd, the broadcast today was soooo much better than the usual...I actually watched much more than I fast-forwarded through

I think if Dave Rieff gets the job full time I may start watching the broadcast in real-time again

I'm going to be blunt.

If any of you think Paul Page is THAT BAD, and that you think you could do better:

APPLY FOR THE JOB AND DO IT BETTER!!!!!!

Better yet, buy out ESPN and fire him!!!!:p

Jeez, people, there are more important things to complain about than this.

Give it a rest........................................................................

Please..................................................................................

Could I do it better? NO.

Are there SEVERAL people around NHRA that have demonstrated they are better? YES.

I do agree it is an old argument, but you have to admit that yesterday brought it back to open discussion.

PS even though I am not a fan, I hope Paul feels better and gets well. I don't want anyone's health compromised.

I though Marty Read was great too, most Maters thought otherwise......

Hope you get well soon Paul.

So with it being Indy, I'd assume that John Kernan was already scheduled to help out? But - if he wasn't scheduled, that is something to think about.... what if one guy goes down unexpectedly, what's the backup plan? The racecars are going to go down the lanes no matter who's commentating.
The production crew has to have contingencies for things like that. Those guys never get the credit they deserve for putting on the shows.

Where was the booth, since Paul wasnt there they didnt show Mike Dunn in the booth, did some1 pick up and leave and didnt want to share there toys lol

Paul Page is a good guy. He was the voice of open wheel racing for years and was good at it. Whether true or not, his drag racing broadcasts have evidenced a lack of understanding or a lack of enthusiasm for our sport.
I wish him well.
Dave Rieff is a better fit.

I think the reason some complain is that we (well most of us) have lived through undoubtedly the two best announcers of all time in Dave Mac and Steve Evans. We are spoiled to have had them call races. They truly loved the sport and knew/know the sport inside and out and it showed. As good of a job, for the most part, as the guys doing it now do, I don't envy them one bit having to follow two of the greats.
