(8-12-11) BOISE, ID - On the heels of resetting the West Coast Outlaw Pro Modified Association’s record for elapsed time by a nitrous car with a 6.175 at a career-best 227.23 MPH in his brand new 1974 El Camino, Randy Walker is ready to bring the heat to Firebird Raceway in Boise, Idaho for the 40th annual Pepsi Nightfire Nationals.
“The runs we made in Sonoma, CA a couple weeks ago were our first full passes on the new car, and we set both series and personal records, so we can’t complain about that,” Walker said. “There is a ton left in her though. We ended up finding a problem that plagued the car’s performance all weekend, and it eventually damaged the engine badly enough that we had to bow out of eliminations before first round. We’ve addressed the issue and look forward to racing at the Nightfire Nationals at full strength.”
In addition to the repairs, Walker and his Palm Desert, CA crew have added some new parts and pieces to help pick up the performance for this weekend’s WCOPMA event.
“We’ve added some newly-designed pistons from JE, along with new electronics from Paul Albino and Toby Graham at Total Induction Tuning Solutions,” said Duane Walker, Randy’s brother and crew chief. “We’re doing all we can to compete with these extremely fast screw-blown cars. We’re slowly figuring out what this new lightweight Matheis Race Cars El Camino wants.”
The man in charge of figuring out exactly what the nitrous-breathing, 822 cubic inch wielding Elky wants is doorslammer icon Charles Carpenter, a two-time Pro Modified winner (1997, 1998) at the Nightfire Nationals.
“We’re really glad to have Charles out this weekend for this huge event,” Duane Walker said. “Being a past champion of this event, he knows the track and understands the unique weather conditions in Boise, so we’re hoping that works to our advantage.”
“Without a doubt, this race will be a highlight of our 2011 campaign, so we want to make the most of it. The Nightfire Nationals is a legendary West Coast drag race,” Randy Walker concluded. “We have all the pieces in place to make a good showing, and just need everything to come together.”
