LINCOLNTON, NC: Doug Herbert has announced the addition of veteran tuner, Doug Kuch, who joined the crew of the Snap-on Tools Top Fuel dragster at the recent event in Las Vegas .
Kuch (pronounced Cook), a native of Ohio , has an extensive background in drag racing. The 48-year-old began in 1987, working for Eric Reed and crew chief Lance Larsen. The next year Kuch went to work on the Budweiser King with crew chief Dale Armstrong. His next job was a five year stint working on and off for Darrell Gwynn and crew chief Ken Veney.
In 1996, Kuch started running the Top Fuel car for Danny Dunn and Glen Camp on the IHRA tour. Kuch spent two seasons working for Top Fuel driver Bruce Litton (2003-04) before becoming part of the package in a turn key purchase of one of Litton's cars by Doug Foley. He spent the 2004 season working for both drivers. In 2005, Kuch went to work full time for Foley, tuning him to IHRA Rookie of the Year honors in 2005 and a runner-up finish in Top Fuel in 2005 and 2006. Kuch joined Doug Herbert Racing at this season's second Las Vegas event and Herbert saw immediate results, enjoying his best qualifying effort since Englishtown.
"I'm excited about coming to work for Doug Herbert," said Kuch. "It's a first rate team and its great to be back on the NHRA side. I can't describe how important it is to get back over here, not to bash the IHRA. I wanted to come back here and Doug has given me the opportunity. It's an honor to work with Jim Brissette and from what I've seen so far this is a good bunch of guys.
"There's no doubt we can become a top running team again," added Kuch. "We're going to make some changes over the winter with a little different engine combination and also fix some things in the bell housing. I'm looking forward to working at the shop with equipment like a Top Fuel engine dyno and a supercharger dyno, as well as, a clutch dyno, flow benches and a CNC machine shop. I will be very busy at Herbert's shop during the off season and I hope to make the most of this opportunity,"
Herbert was equally excited with the addition of Kuch. "I've known Doug Kuch for a long time," said Herbert, "He's worked with a lot of good teams and good people and I'm happy he's joined the Snap-on Tools team. I think he's going to be a huge asset for us and hopefully he can use this opportunity to get us back to the top of the pack."
