Uh oh, this ain't good...

OH MY..........................

To boot, it's an alky flopper with lenco lever shifters...........

He's REALLY Lucky!! It looks like it broke off and we like how he tosses it on the tin at the end...........What else can you do.......

That's Russ Parker. :D I can't believe how far and wide this video has traveled in only a few days!

It is linked at Jalopnik.com ... pretty much the biggest auto blog going. All the commenters (who are more attuned to road racing) speculated he hit the steering quick release ... I had to help them out.

Didn't this happen to another funny car driver (Cruz I believe) a few years ago?

Scary stuff for sure. I can only imagine what he was thinking!

I stuck it in the Lounge a couple days ago ! Definitely a Oh $hit moment !
I was thinking about putting a removable wheel in my Monte cause I didn't think an adjustable Race seat would be safe !
Murphy's Law !
Had to be a bolt or pin came out cause he wasn't pulling hard when it came off !

The title of this thread is pretty much what went through my mind as it as happening:D. Considering what could have happened I'm thankful for the way things turned out. Just to clarify, the steering gearbox did break where the hole goes through the splined shaft. It looks like it was probably cracked for awhile (based on looking at the broken pieces). I think it got worse after the burnout, but I didn't realize it. Then it let go during the run as you all have seen. I had just converted from air shifters in the steering wheel to the manual shift levers (which, by the way, are an absolute hoot!). A truly bizarre incident, just happened to catch it on video.

Russ, here's one of the funniest comments I've read about your video yet:
bet they made him ride in the back on the return lane ,lmao and how many tire bars did it take to get his cheeks to release the seat ???
:D
