Melanie Troxel wasn’t able to get the round wins she was looking for Sunday in the Schuck’s Auto Supply Nationals at Pacific Raceway, but she was able to stay in contention for a spot in NHRA’s Countdown to 1 championship.

Tony Pedregon beat Troxel in the first round with a 4.155-second, 300.40-mph effort to her 4.289 at 282.72 in the Gotham City Racing Dodge Charger R/T.

“It was a disappointing weekend for the team at the time of year when we really need to be making a charge to get into the top 10,” Troxel said. “It seems like we haven’t won a round in a long time. The bright side is that everybody right with us in the standings -- 11, 12 and 13 all went out with us. We aren’t falling further behind but we aren’t making up the ground we need to.”

She is 14th, 104 points behind 10th place with four races to go in the 18-race regular season.

The Fram Autolite Nationals conclude the grueling Western Swing at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., Friday through Sunday.

“When you are having a rough time it is better to get back out there and run again rather than sit around and think about it too much,” said Troxel. “The car runs good numbers during the weekend. We aren’t lost on the tune-up; it’s just that all the little details don’t seem to be coming together.

“Hopefully we’ll come back and turn things around in Sonoma.”
