POMONA, Calif. – Steve Torrence saved his best qualifying performance until Saturday’s final run and it put him solidly into the starting lineup for Sunday’s NHRA Mello Yello Series opener at Pomona Raceway.

The Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster covered the 1,000-foot asphalt in 3.789 seconds at 322.58 mph, eighth-quickest in the 16-car lineup for the 53rd O’Reilly Auto Parts Nationals.

While the day closed on a positive note, Torrence was disappointed after a mechanical problem forced him to abort the day’s opening attempt at the starting line.

“I was frustrated,” he commented, “but we overcame it and we are confident going into eliminations. I was very proud of the last run.

“We will be up against Spencer Massey, (No. 9, 3.793 at 323.97), in the first round. That’s a pretty good car over there, but we have a pretty good hot rod. There’s no doubt we will be ready for him.”
