TORRENCE IN FACEBOOK CHAT ON MARCH 10
Event Links Champ with Students Who Crafted One-of-a-Kind Custom Firepit

KILGORE, Texas – NHRA Top Fuel Champion Steve Torrence has collected a lot of hardware in his professional drag racing career, none of it more unique and little of it more meaningful than the 32”x32”x”19” welded metal, footed firepit that today sits in the yard of the Kilgore home he shares with his wife, Natalie.

A gift from students of Joseph Candela, a welding instructor at Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Mo., the firepit was the end result of a field trip to World Wide Technology Raceway outside St. Louis before last year’s NHRA Midwest Nationals that was made possible through the NHRA’s Youth and Education Services (YES) program.

At 1 p.m., Central time, on Wednesday, March 10, Candela and the students involved in the firepit project will re-unite with Torrence on the latter’s Facebook page for a live chat. Among the topics subject to discussion are how Candela made the initial connection, how Steve overcame cancer and a 300 mile-an-hour crash to finally win his first championship and the importance of teamwork in achieving one’s goals.

The participants also will discuss CAPCO Contractors, Inc., the family-owned business that sponsors Steve’s racing effort, how Billy Torrence’s welding expertise led to the company’s founding, how Steve balances racing and his responsibilities at CAPCO and how, at age 37, the champ is honing his own welding skills.

The firepit itself tells the Torrence story in words deftly cut out of the metal from which it was constructed.

One side, emblazoned with “CAPCO CONTRACTORS, INC.,” recognizes the Texas-based company that sponsors drag racers and drag racing at every competitive level, from Top Fuel to Super Comp to Jr. Dragster.

“STEVE TORRENCE = CANCER DOMINATOR,” acknowledges the 40-time NHRA tour winner’s successful battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma as a teenager. “3X TOP FUEL CHAMPION” speaks to Torrence’s competitive domination of the NHRA’s Camping World tour since 2016 and “Dem Capco Boys” is the champ’s own descriptor for the dedicated crewmembers to whom he owes his success.
