JOLIET, Ill. – By Tommy Johnson, Jr.’s estimation, Route 66 Raceway is one of the best facilities on the NHRA circuit. The driver of the Monster Energy Funny Car contends that anyone who wants to make the quick 16 for the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals eliminations must bring their ‘A’ game.
“Performance wise this is one of the quickest, fastest racetracks we go to all year long,” said Johnson. “You want to make sure you bring everything you’ve got. From a driver’s perspective, it’s the ‘E ticket’ ride. There are usually no pedal fests at Route 66, it’s flat out the whole quarter- mile.”
Johnson set his career best Funny Car elapsed time, 4.672 seconds, and mile per hour, 331.45, at Joliet in 2006 and 2005 respectively. Johnson was runner-up in Chicago in Funny Car in 2003, and is looking toward victory circle this time around.
“Our Monster Energy team is right on the edge of a ‘monster’ performance if you’ll pardon the pun,” joked Johnson. “We have been harassed by little mechanical puzzlers here and there, but we’re right there. If we can get into a rhythm with some consistency, we’ll be going some rounds.”
Johnson made a final four showing earlier this year in Phoenix .
Nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) qualifying for the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals begins Friday, June 6 at 3:30 p.m., followed by a second session at 7 p.m. There are two qualifying sessions Saturday, 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., with eliminations scheduled to begin Sunday at 11 a.m.
