Pomona - J.R. Todd guessed Friday's second qualifying attempt for Sunday's NHRA season-opening Winternationals may have been close to 4.50 seconds if his Dexter Tuttle-owned dragster had been under power the entire 1320 feet.
The car made big move to the left as it neared the finish line and Todd masterfully kept it from touching the centerline. His 4.532-second effort at 317.42 mph was a few ticks off Thursday's best of 4.515 at 320.43 mph, leaving him sixth with two more runs scheduled Saturday.
"We are having front-wing issues," said Todd, "and that may have caused it. We have a new wing that should be here Saturday. There also was a big oil-down before we ran. The car was running well until we got to the place where the track had been oiled down.
"Jim (Walsh, team crew chief) has the car running consistently. He wants to pick up the pace a little bit Saturday. I think we are in good shape."
