The Pacific ProComp event held in Medford, Oregon, over the fourth of July Weekend was a hot one as the competition was fierce and the race attracted the biggest crowd in recent memory. The stands were full when the first round of eliminations began A 7:30 PM on July 3rd. California racer Butch Stroupe didn't show signs of any rust as he won the event after parking his racing operation for a two year period.
Round one: Curtis Clevenger beat Garry Fauble with a 6.58 at 209 MPH. Ed Wells took care of Rich Bailey with a 6.78 when Bailey lost fire while backing up from the burnout. To end the round, the number one qualifier, Butch Stroupe, got a bye run to advance into the semis.
In the semi finals: Stroupe took care of Wells in a great side by side match up. Stroupe ran a 6.72 at 211 MPH to Wells' 6.58 at 211 MPH. Finally, Clevenger beat Bailey who filled in to make it a show for the fans as Clevenger would advance regardless of the outcome. Clevenger posted a 6.52 at 210 MPH to Bailey's 7.44 at 188 MPH.
In the final round: Stroupe ran a 6.60 to Clevenger's 6.52 in a hole shot to win the event.
Also: Darin Bay broke the 300 MPH barrier in Medford with a 301 MPH pass with his Warped Speed Jet Dragster.
