Torrence goes against Morgan Lucas to start Gatornationals
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Steve Torrence took a positive approach to Saturday’s two vital qualifying attempts at Gainesville Raceway and left the track later in day satisfied with his 10th-place starting slot for Sunday’s 44th annual Gatornationals.
There was some trepidation following Friday’s two 1,000-foot efforts that weren’t quick enough to rank in the top 16.
Torrence was undaunted. “We knew we needed a good run Saturday,” he said. “We had been trying some different tune-ups and got a little behind where we wanted to be. So we gave it our best shot on the first run and the car ran well.”
The Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster blasted down the asphalt in 3.842 seconds at 314.97 mph that wound up 10th quickest.
“We had some good numbers at the top end of the track and we should be ready in the morning for round one of eliminations.
“We have a tough race against Morgan Lucas (No. 7, 3.832 at 320.28) in the first round. We are going to show up and be ready to go for it.”
