Steve Torrence didn’t leave zMAX Dragway Sunday with the Visitmyrtlebeach.com 4-Wide Nationals championship trophy, but he was nonetheless pleased to celebrate his 28th birthday with an opening-round win in this unique event.
He had a quicker reaction time than his three rivals in the first round and the Interstate Batteries/USO-North Carolina dragster was the second across the finish line at 3.869 seconds, 315.49 mph. Tony Schumacher was first, Doug Herbert third and Doug Foley fourth.
In the semifinal, the car smoked the tires, slowing Torrence to 4.523 at 195.05 mph. Larry Dixon won it, Shawn Langdon was second and Schumacher third.
“It felt real good winning that round,” said Torrence. “We lost in the next one, but, in the grand scheme of things, we had a good weekend. We qualified well and the car ran well. That’s what we want to do at every race.
“We will take what we learned here and start planning for our next race.”
