BRAINERD, Minn. – Greg Stanfield advanced to the Pro Stock quarterfinals of Sunday’s Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway and clinched a position in NHRA’s Countdown to 1 championship playoffs.
He began eliminations with a hole-shot victory over Kurt Johnson. Stanfield’s .032-second reaction time kept him in the lead down the quarter-mile. His Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks GXP lit the win light in 6.623 seconds at 207.98 to Johnson’s quicker 6.608 at 208.81.
In the quarterfinal race against Rodger Brogdon, who had lane choice by one-thousandth of a second, Stanfield once again had the better reaction -- .038 to .054-second. Only this time, Brogdon won with a 6.659 at 208.10 to 6.624, 208.04.
“We missed the tune-up a little bit on the last run,” Stanfield commented, “and there weren’t many good numbers coming out of that lane. I think we are locked into the eighth spot in the Countdown.”
The regular season ends with the 57th annual U.S. Nationals, Sept. 2-5, at Indianapolis and the title showdown kicks off at Charlotte, Sept. 18.
