Rain surfaced again at Maple Grove Raceway Saturday, limiting J.R. Todd and the SKULL Shine Top Fuel team to one qualifying run, but Todd and the team made the most of it. Todd registered his quickest run of the weekend, 4.549 seconds at 324.98 mph, to qualify eighth for Sunday's rain-delayed Toyo Tires Nationals. "We were pretty consistent this weekend," said Todd. "I think we'll be pretty competitive Sunday."
Todd races Cory McClenathan (No. 9, 4.550 at 317.64 mph) in Sunday's opening round that is important to Todd's hopes of gaining a berth in the top 10 before the season ends. Todd (776 points) is 12th and is attempting to catch McClenathan, who is 10th (825).
Crew chief Jimmy Walsh tuned the car to previous runs of 4.55 and 4.57 seconds. "It shows we can run in cooler conditions as well as in hot conditions," said Todd, whose two race victories in his rookie season came in warmer weather.
