Shirley's first win

I thought it was at The Grove when he drove under the single armco rail. I could be mistaken.

I started going to the Columbus race in '72. I was 4 years young. I saw Shirley win all of her wins in Columbus.
I was also luck enough to see Shirley win in Indy in '82. I was also fortunate to see the Last Pass in' 03 in Pomona. It was a very bittersweet day for me. I had my differences with Shirley. But she will always hold a very special place in my heart.

but under the circumstances, it's very appropriate.
I still have the National Dragster paper from that event, and I also remember the day that it arrived, I was shocked to see that she actually won one.....

Yes, Al Smith is sadly correct. Bob was in the right lane at Maple Grove and when he left the line the car went into giant wheelstand. The car slammed back to the ground hard and broke the front end. It looked like he had zero control of the car. The car veered into the left lane and then drove under the guardrail. It was a very nasty accident. There is film of the accident on the old Gold Dust Classics "Flames of Fear" video. It was certainly a real shame.

I was there. Shirley beat Bob Edwards (Edwards Bros TF Car) in the final. Didn't like her then. Don't like her now. Nor anywhere in between (difference between Tobler and I). But glad I was there to see a part of our history.
And I'm sure she has a warm place in her heart for you.
Trash her all you want. But you can never take away her driving skills.
She did not have the good fortune of walking into a million dollar deal.
And dispite all the people like you , she won 3 World Championships.

May 15, 1977. Seems like the subject of Bob Edwards comes up at least once a year. My Dad knew him rather well, and had spoken to him in the staging lanes about 20 minutes before his run. I've seen the accident (30 years after the wreck) and it was exactly how my Dad & brother described it to me. Front end broke, wheels collapsed when spokes flew out, no control over steering, and wedged under the armco. Surprisingly, not a really high speed crash, but enough to take his life.

Why are you trashing on Roger? It's his opinion, let him speak it. He never once said anything about Shirley's accomplishments, and you have to admit, Shirley was far from the most likable person in the pits.
Boy I remember Richard Tharp used to dig under her skin on a weekly basis.
I remember when I was a small kid at the events, when watching the fuel cars, as soon as that pink car came to the waterbox, there was something magical in the air and everyone knew it. I guess being a kid and growing up seeing Shirley fight with the other drivers we consider legends today was something that can never be duplicated or recreated. Since then I have kept in touch with her over the years and though she is bluntly honest, I have always found her to be a very nice and generous person. I would love to see her get the deal together and get back. Just my 2 cents.

Shirley wrote in her book about how she felt about Richard Tharp, something along the lines of him being the meanest person she had ever met. As for her being likeable in the pits, unless you have walked in her shoes, and delt with being a outsider at best, and that was how it was, long before the now very open door that greeted Ashley, Melanie, Hillary.
Sure didn't mean to start some kind of war here.
