Duane Shields got his performance edge back by breaking into in the elite 5.20 zone at the NHRA regional race in Phoenix AZ. “I’m very happy to see that the PEAK team is making good progress. We tested before the race and have a new team member setting the clutch. The car made competitive runs and we didn’t hurt anything so it was a great weekend for us” Duane said.
Duane qualified third with a stout 5.31 and faced James Stevens in round one. Stevens qualified fourth with a 5.34 so on paper it looked to be a close race. Stevens got off the starting line first but Duane made a blistering run as he stopped the clock with a victorious a 5.28 at 276 MPH over Stevens' respectable 5.37 at 266 MPH to advance to the semifinals.
In the semis, Duane took on Shawn Cowie who knocked off Johnny Ahten in round one. As the lights came down, both cars left together with Cowie getting a slight edge with a .065 reaction time to Duane’s .066. It was a great side-by-side race with Cowie holding on for the win as he rang up a 5.24 at 275 MPH to Duane’s valiant 5.29 at 275 MPH. “Shawn ran well and deserved to win. He went on to win the race and congrats to him. His tuner, Norm Grimes knows how to tune a car very aggressively” Duane said.
The PEAK team now heads east for two races in Florida beginning with a regional event in Gainesville followed by the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals. “We run well in Gainesville and I hope to have better results at the regional event next weekend. The wins will come if we keep running well” Duane said.
Duane would like to thank his sponsors PEAK Antifreeze and Motor Oil, Final Charge, Blue Def, NGK, GRP and Brad Anderson Enterprises for their continued support in 2017.
